What do you mean modernize Shakespeare?

Today you will continue working on paraphrasing and translating your Shakespeare lines.  You need to have this complete no later than the end of class Friday.

Below is a video example from the original version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.  This is how Shakespeare intended for it to be seen.

Below is Baz Luhrmann's interpretation of this scene.  He's changed it to a more modern setting but kept the language the same.

This is what I'd like you to do with your scene.  Read through the lines and change them to how you think they would be said today.  In order to do this you must understand what is happening in your scene.  You may want to read through the whole thing first so you know what's  happening.

Once you are finished think about what type of setting you might see this scene happening in today? 

How would the relationships be portrayed?

1.  In the book write a "somebody, wanted, but" for your relationship book.  Don't forget the title!  Also, please include your thoughts.
2.  In the "I Wonder" boxes you need to write your research question.  It is the same on the front and the back side.
3.  In the "I discovered..." boxes you need to record some evidence you found that you would like to share out with your peers.  This should be recorded from your Inquiry Notes.  Copy down what you wrote in your "Paraphrase" and "My Thoughts" column. You need to share two things to get a three.

• Begin working on yellow Shakespeare performance packet

4th Hour:

• Discussion

• Work time on Romeo and Juliet performances

Last Day to Research!

By the end of the hour you need to have these things turned in.

1.  Inquiry Notes - Check the paraphrasing rubric below to see how you will be graded.

2.  Bibliographies - Three to get a three.  Check the bibliography rubric below.

3.  Study Island formative quiz.  See picture below for directions to access.

Bibliography

You must have your Inquiry Notes completely finished before you begin your bibliographies.

Today you need to work on your bibliographies.  Watch the video below on how to fill out a bibliography for an internet site.  I would recommend watching it once all they way through and then again when you are filling out yours.

You need to watch the video all the way through before you can ask a question.  Remember, each source needs it's own bibliography.  In order to score a 3 you need to share, in Google Docs, 3 bibliographies with me.

What's a database?

If you've already found two internet sources, today I'd like you to look for something in the databases.

A research database is basically a place on the computer that houses all sorts of information for people to use.  Most of the information in research databases comes from print sources first.  You might, consider it an online library.

Using a database can be very helpful when doing research because it can hold many pieces of good information and your search is narrowed more than if you were just using the open internet.

Today I'd like you to look at these two databases.

You can search in the databases using exactly the same tips you use when searching the internet.

Please try to find one database source today to add to your Inquiry Notes chart.  Don't forget to fill in the "Paraphrase" and "My Thoughts" sections.

How to: Interview!

1.  YOU NEED TO TURN IN YOUR GREEN ONLINE SOURCE EVALUATION SHEET TODAY!

2.  Make sure to have at least 2 different Internet sources.

3.  Look at the board for information on how to fill in the "Paraphrase" and "My Thoughts" sections of your Inquiry Notes.

4.  Begin creating meaningful interview questions (try for 10).

The next research resource we will use is an interview!  You may interview an adult, of your choice, on the topic of your research.

You need to create meaningful questions that will lead you to more information.  This needs to be taken seriously and recorded to be turned in.

Here are some tips to creating good research interview questions.

1.  Avoid questions that may encourage the person to answer a particular way.

2.  Try not to use phrases like, "Do you agree" or "There are many people who believe..."

3.  Don't ask more than one question at a time.  "Do you think gay marriage is bad and that we shouldn't have it in Minnesota?"  Instead try, "Do you think gay marriage is bad?"  then, "Do you think we shouldn't have it in Minnesota?"

4.  Make sure your questions are specific and to the point.

5.  Only ask questions that relate to what you are researching.

Since a lot of students are gone for MAP testing we will continue with what we started yesterday.

If you did not turn in your green sheet assessing a credible and accurate website you need to do that today.

Begin looking for credible sources

Today we are going to start looking for credible sources!

First thing to do is log into Osseo Apps.

Next, find the Inquiry Notes document I shared with you.  

Open it and follow the directions listed at the top.

You may use the hour to search for credible sources.  Make sure to fill in your green sheet for today.  At the top in the box it looks like this.

This sheet is due at the end of the hour.  I would suggest filling it out for your first source so you don't forget.

Trying out our search terms

After going over the answers to our worksheets from yesterday we will work on adding more search terms to our question.

Here are some helpful tips:

1.  What are the most important phrases/words in your question?

• Underline these and then rewrite them below as their own separate search terms.

2.  Can you think of any synonyms for these important words/phrases?

• Synonyms are words that mean the same thing.

3.  If you go to www.dictionary.com does it show you any synonyms?

• Sometimes there are synonyms in the definition or at the bottom of the page.  Make sure to scroll down and double check!

4.  What things (people, places, ideas) you already know of that relate to your topic?

• What information did you learn from your book about the topic?  Remember to keep this to short phrases or single words.

5.  Is there more than one side to your question?

• Is it debatable or would people have varying opinions on the topic?  Make sure to record search terms for both sides of the topic.

Once you have a long list of terms you may begin trying out your search.  Make sure to use the BrainPOP search tips to help narrow your search.  Record one site you think will be useful on your green sheet.  We will have more time in class tomorrow to finish and gather more evidence.

The Good and The Bad

Today we are working on the advantages and disadvantages of research sources.  First we will start off by watching this research video on BrainPOP and filling in our chart.  I would recommend watching the video once for understanding, then a second time to fill in your table chart.  We will go over the answers in class tomorrow.

What is an inquiry question?

- Create a list of potential topics for your research paper.  Brainstorm different things related to love relationships.

- Star, circle, box, highlight in some way three potential topics.

- Create as many questions as you possibly can about those three topics.  Right now don't worry if they are good questions or not.
